I just received a copy of version 3.9 after I installed it and I tried to launch the program. When I do I get a message that my license key is already in use and the software will not start.

First of all I thought I would post here instead sending another personal email in case anyone else is having this problem.

OK Pete here is some more info for you. I uninstalled and reinstalled at least five times using the new license key you emailed me. In case there was some sort of registry issue I ran a System Restore to the point just before I installed 3.9. NO luck. It shouldn't but just in case I uninstalled 3.54 still no luck. I thought maybe it's a Vista issue so I installed on my notebook which is running XP. Although it took quite a long time it is running fine under XP. So the problem seems to be unique to Vista.

Now it gets really weird I tried to right click and see if I could run as administrator. Its not an option. I think this is the only icon on the desktop where this does not even show up on the right click menu. Next I thought could it be a problem with the desktop link. So I navigate to the actual exe file in the Program Files directory. If I double click on this I get the same problem about the license key in use. However, if I right click on this I do get the Run as Administrator and if I select that the program does start and appears to run normally. Once I have it running I check the manage license keys under help and the only one shown is the new one you emailed me. I then close the program and try to start it again only to get the same error about the license key is already in use. Which is not even the one installed according to the software it self.
Which means I am out of ideas and thoroughly confused as to what the software is trying to do with the license key in use message.

captphill,

I just talked to Pete Thayer on the phone. He said he really does not kow what the problem is. But there is apparently some hopefully minor issue with Vista. He said he is making this issue a priority for the his programmers.

In the mean if you want to start the program, the following worked for me. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the folder C:\Program Files\Thayer Birding Software\eViewer 3.9 (assuming you used the default install location). Program Files is a hidden folder so Vista will need your permission to continue. You can then right click on the file called "eViewer" select the option Run as Administrator. At least for me the program will at least start now. I hope this helps at least short term.

For anyone who is having this license key issue, I just discoverd a partial fix. I was trying to see if I could change the compatibility in Windows to XP mode. I have not had much luck with this feature in the past, but figured anything was worth a try. That did not work but I did come up with the following. First delete the desktop icon that the install wizard placed on the desktop. Then navigate to the folder "C:\Program Files\Thayer Birding Software\eViewer 3.9". If you did not change the location during the install there will be a file there called eviewer it should be displaying the BNA icon. You can right click on this. With that menu up select the send to menu and select desktop. The Thayers BNA icon should now be on your desktop. Right click that and select the properties window at the bottom of the list. Select the compatibility tab and under the title "privelege level" check "Run this program as an adminsitrator". Click Apply. This will now allow you to run BNA from the desktop. It will ask for permission every time but at least it will run.

If you want it in the start menu; you can copy the new icon into the directory C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Thayer Birding Software (the default location) or anywhere else in the start menu you would like. Hopefully this will allow anyone with this problem to get up and running until Pete and company can come up with a permanent fix.

Mike,

"Select the compatibility tab and under the title "privelege level""

I can't find that option under the compatibility tab.  I guess I'll just have to wait until Pete's programmers get a fix . Thank God my 3.5.5 still works

Just curious but after taking another look at your screenshot, the windows and icons look like Win XP. My fix above is specific to Vista. I spent some time trying on my nootbook this morning. If there is a way to do this in XP, I can't seem to find it. If you are running XP that would be interesting because when I talked to Pete on the phone it sounded to me like this problem was unique to Vista. If you are running XP you might want to post something on the Help Desk. I gather Thayer's tech people check that more often than this forum. I'm sure they would be interested that this problem is occuring with XP too.
Good Luck.
