Vista is a new operating system from Microsoft. We are getting many reports that the Thayer birding software generates error #339 when you try to load it on a computer running Vista. (It works great on Windows XP).

We are trying to solve this problem as soon as possible. If this has happened to you, add a post to this thread and tell us exactly when you got the error and the full text message that appeared. The more information we have, the faster we can fix this problem.

Thanks,

Pete Thayer, President

Hi Pete,
Mine installed fine but when I try to load it I get the message: Error 3420 Message Object invalid or no longer set.
Location: mod Main;Main0
I also posted this when I did the survey.

Hi Pete,
I have some more information. I have Birders Diary and was browsing their forum and it was suggested to right click on the program icon on the desktop and click run as administrator and so I tried it with BNA and sure enough no error message and it came up. Right now it is working. One minor detail though is when I clicked on the birders handbook I got the message that the winhelp32.exe is not included in Vista. So I did some research and it said that the help format for Vista should be .chm, .html, or .xml. You may want to research if you haven't already.

Hi Nancy,

We are working on version 3.6 of Guide to Birds of North America and hope to release it in April.

The Help files and The Birder's Handbook have both been updated already and both now have the .chm extension. Thanks for your help!

Pete

Pete,

Where can I get these updated help files? I can't seem to find them on your web site.

Sorry - the Help file and The Birder's Handbook file have been updated, but they are not available as a download from our web site. They are only in the beta version of version 3.6. We hope to relase this v3.6 in late April.

However, I will see if I can post the new format of the Help file on our web site. Stay tuned.

I have version 3.5.  When I try to launch the software on my Vista machine, I get the message that the database is being optimized, but the program stops responding at that point.  The program installed just fine.  I look forward to the updates!  Thanks.

Brenda,

I had a similiar problem with both BNA and Birder's Diary. It has something to do with the new security features in Vista. If you left click the icon on your desktop then click "Run as Administrator" the first time. This solved the problem for me and both programs now run fine with just clicking on the icon.

Thanks, Mike. I did as you said, and the program launched just fine. I can't get the Birders' Handbook to work, and it won't search for updates, but at least the program is usable at this point. I will patiently await the updates Pete referred to earlier.

Mike has found the answer! Congratulations Mike.

I would LOVE to hear from others running Vista -- do you have any errors when you right-click the Thayer Birding Software icon and run the program as Administrator?

I am aware of just two:

1. The Help Files will not appear (We hope to post a free download tomorrow)

2. The Birder's Handbook files do not appear.

Pete,

Actually the thanks should probably go to Jeff Jones at Birder's Diary. I was having similiar issues starting up BD and Jeff suggested that in the Tech Forum over at BD. Glad I could be of help if it is not an original idea. Also, my copy is running fine execpt for the Help files and Handbook you mention above and the video issue being discussed in another thread. So that makes a total of 3 "problems" when running BNA on the Vista platform. Good luck with 3.6 I'm looking forwad to it.

I had the GBNA viewer working "okay" on my Vista laptop a couple of weeks ago, but now, all of a sudden, I'm getting the #339 error.  The file that is shown "missing or invalid" in the error message is COMDLG32.OCX.  I've tried reinstalling regularly and by copying the CD to the harddrive and installing "as administrator", but the program won't start at all due to this message.  No matter what, I still get the same error.  I didn't get any errors while installing.  Was there some MS update that made a change here, or am I missing something?

Thanks.

Ginny

I have an update.  I went to a web site (Googled it) and downloaded a copy of the missing file (comdlg32.ocx) and put it in my windows/system32 folder, restarted, and now the program works again.  At least now I have a fix if it changes again!

Look forward to the rest of the fixes you all are working on!

Ginny
