How to sell more CD-ROMs

The Key to higher sales is to actually use the CD-ROM every day to answer customer's questions.
We will send you the free CD-ROM -- you supply the computer.

Set up a computer with a flat screen monitor in your store.
You will pay for the computer within four months with increased sales.

  1. Fill your store with photos and songs of the birds of your town. Once your customers see how easy it is to use, they'll want to take it home!
  2. You are losing sales if you are not using multimedia selling techniques. Today's computer savvy shoppers expect to be entertained. Thayer Birding Software makes it easy -- not only to sell our software, but to use it as a cross-marketing tool to sell your other products.
  3. "I saw a bird in my yard..." Take too long to identify it by fumbling through a book and you lose their interest (and a possible sale). Instead, walk them over to the computer and help them describe the bird using the Identification Wizard. They will see and hear all of the possible birds fitting their description. Find the bird and they will be amazed! Now you have a great chance to sell them the software PLUS seed and feeders to attract that bird! Using the CD is all about cross-selling.
  4. "We find that having the software up and running in the store increases sales. We have the quizzes running all of the time and it really grabs the customnr's attention." - Richard Tofflemire - Wild Bird Unlimited, Guelph, Ontario
  5. "Thanks for the Free Computer!!!  A little over a month ago I bought a computer and monitor from my local Staples Office Supply. I bought it primarily to demo your software in my Wild Bird Center store and as a result of using the hardware to show your software I've now paid for the computer." - Lee Duer, Wild Bird Center, Waldorf, Maryland
  6. "You were right Pete! When I saw you at the BirdWatch America Show you said, 'Get the computer up and the software will sell!' Well, it sold! Call me, I need to reorder." - Joe Ranney - Wild Birds Unlmited, Marietta, Georgia

More tips from actual store owners...

Be Proactive! Any time someone is looking at the software, we approach them and ask "Have you ever seen this software before? It's great! Let me show you a few of the things it can do." If you do not walk up to the customer, you will not make the sale.

Set up a separate computer. You cannot use the same computer to display this software that you use to run the store. The birding software needs to be on a separate computer. We placed it on its own table at the end of the Bird Seed aisle - not at the checkout counter.

Get a Flat Screen monitor. The computer you use can be a few years old, but the monitor and the graphics should be the best. The eye-popping photos astonish customers.

"I saw a strange bird. What was it?"  This question is your opportunity to take customers over to the computer and use the ID Wizard to identify their bird. Start by saying "Let's find out. We have a computer program that can help us. It identifies birds and a whole lot more." By the second or third time someone comes in and asks this question, their response is always "Oh, I just have to get this program!"

Leave the program focused on the last bird a customer asked about. The field guide view has photos, range maps, ID tips and more. Having a bird from our area displayed makes people stop and look at the screen. For us, this is more effective than having a flash card quiz or a screensaver running.

Tips from Pete Thayer...

Run your free copy of Guide to Birds of North America in your store on a 19" Flat Screen monitor. The computer itself can be a few years old, but the monitor makes all the difference. Check out deals at:  www.Dell.com/smallbusiness

When demonstrating the program, always click on Filter at the top left part of the screen to show how easy it is to view just the birds from your state or province, even though all 925 species are on the CD.

Add a printer to your dedicated computer to print articles from The Birder's Handbook for your customers. There are 250 articles on birds and bird behavior plus articles on each of the 650 breeding birds of North America!

Best gift idea: Birds of My State This handy CD solves all your customer's gift giving needs! Have it on hand for gifts to out-of-state friends and relatives. Users choose one of ten regions or any state or any province at the time they install the software on their computer.

The Thayer Birding Software Guide to Birds of North America is the most powerful selling tool in your store. Use this software to cross-market everything in your store! Once your customer sees how easy it is to identify birds in their yard, they'll need seed, feeders, baths, houses, etc. to attract even more birds!
