We are about to start round three of beta testing for version 3.6. This version will run on Vista. At the moment, I am expecting a release date of June 30, 2007. Having said that, it will be released when it is ready.
We rewrote the entire code in .Net rather than VB6. For non-programmers like myself, that just means we used a technology that was ten years newer than what we had been using. It should make the program run better and have fewer error messages.
The new tab on this web site called "Features" shows the new version 3.6 -- look at "Easy to Use" to see the slight change in the user interface.
I view these as the major changes: 1. The export to iPod now exports photos as well as 708 songs. 2. It is very easy to open multiple birds at the same time and jump between them. 3. Blue navigation buttons let you jump to the next or previous bird. 4. It works on Vista and XP. 5. Many of the more popular state and province CDs now have more species.
All of this allowed us to finally create a Mac version. The Mac version of Guide to Birds of North America will be released about one month after the Windows version 3.6 is released. Right now, I am guessing July 31, 2007 will be the release date. (State/Province CDs will not be available in Mac.)
