Are you planning to expand the ID wizard, specifically the field marks section, beyond what is currently in version 3.5? I would like to suggest possibly adding spots on back or breast areas, distictive collers, and possibly beak/bill colors or shape. I'm still new to this bird watching and often end up with a list of at least 30 to 40 birds that I have to match my sightings to one image at a time. Seasonal color changes in some species make that even harder for me. Also some of your color photos I suspect are color enhanced and are not really true to life.  Having worked with computer databases for several years it seems the field marks section sould be fairly easy to enhance and make easier for novices users like myself to narrow down the possible choices even furter.

We will probably be doing this in the version following v3.9.

Which field marks would you like to see?

My wife and I are novice birders who have a hard time figuring out what bird we are looking at quite often. It would be very helpful if we could specify what season we see the bird in, as the non-breeding plumage of a lot of birds is much different than their breeding plumage. We have probably seen 250 to 300 different birds, but currently only have about 188 on our life list. We have a very hard time, as do most beginner to average birders, trying to identify gulls, waders, sparrows, and warblers. Any tips that could be given in the description of the birds to help identify when seeing the bird in its natural habitat would be wonderful.

It would be nice to be able to produce a life list or custom list in different formats, and importing from different formats. I talk to people around the country on the internet that do not use a program for keeping up with their sightings. It would be really nice to be able to import their sightings so that I can study the birds that are known to be in a certain area and be able to set up quizes to help me learn them. I know that I can make my own lists from theirs, but it is quite time consuming. Being able to have all of this information in one program and not having to switch between programs would make it much easier.

I am thrilled to see all of the new changes in v3.9. The Song ID is something I have longed for. I am half deaf and a lot of times cannot hear a bird, but my wife can. My wife knows less than I about birds, but is pretty good at remembering a birds song when she hears it. It is nearly impossible to go through all of the birds that a song might be.

You can do this now by sharing Custom lists with other folks.

There are about 50 Custom lists for the top birding tours provided by Victor Emanuel Nature Tours in the Forum section - Custom Lists.

The ID Wizard needs to treat Females (where there is substantial difference in plumage) as separate species. That is, not only does it need to ID the female using diffent colors but the photograph that shows in the Photo Gallery also needs to be of the female. A good example is that I recently took a photograph of a Female Orchard Oriole. There was no way I could ID this bird using the ID Wizard.

I realize this woudl require a good amount of work but it would be a major improvement in the ID Wizard. I can not think of anything that would ,ake the ID Wizard more useful.

The next version of the software will have an ID Wizard that shows photo #1 just like it does now (usually the male in breeding plumage) AND there will be a button to click to see photo #2 which will be females or non-breeding plumage. We are in the process of reordering all the images. This will make the ID Wizard much more useful. At least this way you will be able to identify something like a female Rose-breasted Grosbeak.

The colors that are built into the program now reflect male, female and immature colors. So no changes are necessary there.
