Problem: How can I make a screen saver using birds I select? Can I make the birds sing?

Solution: Start by creating a Custom List.
One way to do this is to open the Identification Wizard and filter the list of birds until you have those you want for your screen saver. The Group tab will let you select all the birds from a single Family -- Warblers or Owls, for example. Click the button at the bottom of the Identification Wizard that says "Save Selections as a list" or "Save As Custom List." Name the list you just created and click "Add."

Next, open the Custom List Manager by clicking the Custom List icon. Highlight the list you want to use as a screen saver. Then click the button at the bottom of the Custom List Manager that says "Save as Screen Saver." In version 3.9. click File and then click "Save As Screen Saver." Now you may elect to have the best photo display or select any photo of the bird at random. If you want your screen saver to also play the bird's song, click "Yes" where it asks if you want to include sounds. (Warning: including sounds makes the size of the screen saver almost ten times as large!) Click "OK." A message box will tell you the space the quiz will take up on your hard drive.

Congratulations, you have now created a screen saver that will display bird photos. You do not need your CD to be in the CD-ROM drive for the screen save to work.

Now you need to tell your computer that this is the screen save you want displayed. From your computer's desktop, click Start in the lower left corner. Then click on Control Panel and then click on Display.

Now click on the Screen Saver tab. From the drop-down list of screen savers, select Thayer Birding Software.
Click Settings.

For version 3.5, make your selections on this screen:
How long do you want to display each image?
Do you want to display the bird's common name?
Do you want to display the photographers name?
Which of 113 special effects would you like -- or do you want all 113 to appear at random?
Do you want the sound to play once or do you want it to loop constantly? Looping will mean your computer is always playing bird songs while the screen saver is running -- are you sure this is OK with your cat?

Click "Save" in the Settings screen and then at the bottom of the Display Properties window, click "Apply" and then click "OK."

Please note: There is a bug in version 3.9 that makes it impossible to create a screen saver, unless version 3.5 was alread installed. This was fixed in a free update released on September 30, 2007. To get this free update, open the program, click Help and then click Check for Updates.
