v3.5 - Error 6 - Install Compressed WAV (ADPCM) codec

Properties ID: 000062
Filed under:

Problem: If you get a Run-time Error 6 (overrun error), this could be caused by a missing audio codec (coder/decoder). ADPCM provides support for compressed WAV audio files and comes standard on Windows machines. However, this file can be deleted or removed.

Solution: You may want to upgrade to the latest version of the software. Visit the Online Nature Mall to order.

To attempt to fix this problem yourself, first verify that you do not have the codec installed.  If you have determined that it's missing, follow these instructions:

  1. Choose Start > Control Panel > Add hardware. Click 'Next'.
  2. Choose 'Yes, I have already connected the hardware', then click 'Next'.
  3. Choose 'Add a new hardware device' (at the bottom of the list) and click 'Next'.
  4. Choose 'Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced)', and click 'Next'.
  5. Select 'Sound, video and game controllers' and click 'Next'.
  6. Select '(Standard system devices)' and click 'Have Disk'.
  7. Click 'Browse' when you get the 'Install From Disk' dialog box and open the C:WindowsSystem32 folder. In here you
  8. will find the mmdriver.inf file. Select it and click 'Open'.
  9. Click 'OK' in the 'Install From Disk' dialog box. If you see a warning about logo compatibility, just click 'Continue Anyway'. Now you should see a list of audio codec's. Amongst it you should find Microsoft ADPCM Audio Codec and IMA ADPCM Audio Codec. I'd try the Microsoft codec.
  10. To install select it and click 'Next'. This should re-install the codec (for the IMA ADPCM you will need your Windows XP CD, and for both you will need to restart your computer before the codec works). Repeat the procedure for each codec for which you need support If you are asked for a .dll file with the IMA codec, use the one in the system32 folder.
