v3.9 - Unknown License Error: Access to the Path Denied

Article ID: 000111

Problem: About 2 weeks ago I purchased and installed a Birds of NA version 3.9. I have been using it with no problem for the last 2 weeks. Today when I tried to open it from my desktop I got the following error message:  "Unknown License Error:  Access to the Path 'C:\Program Files\Thayer Birding Software\eViewer 3.9\eViewer.lic' is denied."  The program does not open at all.

Solution: It sounds like you are trying to run the program using a different user account.  If you are, that should work, but you will need to make sure that that user account (or any user account for that matter) has read/write privileges to the eField Guide Viewer installation folder and all the files contained in it.  The error message you are reporting is clearly a file permission/privileges issue.

To change the permission settings for the Personal account, try something like this:
While in the Administrator account, right-click the Thayer eFieldGuide icon on your desktop.
Click Properties.
Click the Security tab (it may say permissions in some versions of Windows)
Click on the Group or User name you want to change permissions for
Click the Edit button.

From here you can Allow or Deny permissions for the Personal account.

Follow-up Comment From User: I have the program installed on my agency-issued computer.  I had to have "administrative privileges" to install it.  Last night after I submitted this ticket I thought that I'd try to get admin privileges again then try to open the program.  It worked.  It looks like this is something that I have to work out on my end.  Thanks so much for your rapid response.

Everyone should do this: update to v3.9.8 or at least get the new license.dll file and replace the old file.
